The sudden passing of Virgil Abloh on 28 November 2021 shocked millions of people around the world. Social media platforms were flooded with photographs, text messages, videos, eulogies and reflections. He was undoubtedly one of the most iconic and talked about figures in the fashion industry. After watching his last show for Louis Vuitton titled "Virgil Was Here" we thought it was only right to share a bit of what we took away from how he lived his life, his work ethic and personal philosophy.
Here are 5 life lessons we learnt from Virgil Abloh:
1. Reconnect with your inner child
The younger version of you still lives somewhere inside you and is watching everything you do. Remember who you were before the world told you who to be.
2. Dream beyond limits
Have the courage to really use your imagination and push the boundaries of creativity. Part of being a visionary means you have to let go of all limitations and believe that you can make the impossible, possible.
3. Execute all of your ideas
The catalyst of change has always been action. You can change the world with just one idea, but you have to make it happen. What you put out into the world is your only legacy.
"Life is so short you can't waste even a day subscribing to what someone thinks you can do versus knowing what you can do." - Virgil Abloh
4. Ignore the critics
The most innovative people in the world are always the most heavily criticised. In this digital age, everyone feels too comfortable sharing negativity and having personal opinions about people they don't actually know. As creatives, we are sensitive about our work but not everyone will understand that. You may be hated, you may be criticised...do you anyway.
5. Kill them with kindness
When it's all said and done, the impact you have had on real people, in real life will always speak louder. Use your position to do good and open doors for others.
